I got this CJ-10a about a year ago. I got it running and driving, but the Nissan SD-33 is a little slow for my tastes. Besides, it has a lot to push with the 37s and extra bed length.

It had an extended wheel base when I got it, I made a bed for it last year and I am really happy with how it turned out.

I just picked up a parts truck with a 4bt, NV4500 D60 front, 14bff rear with a detroit. The 4bt is a little rough, but I will get it back in shape.

Lots of work ahead!!!

First I want to complement the contributors and moderators on this board. It is really first-class site with accurate, reliable information and without the sniping and name-calling that is so common on other boards. I would not have taken on this project without the documented experience of so many others. I really appreciate the organization of the FAQ's and the Tech Section. I have been able to get most of my questions answered by searching and reading. Nice work!

Second I want to say that you should not try this without a supportive and understanding wife. I am diving into my first swap with "her car"-- the one that gets used for moving people around during the day and on family trips. Maybe I'm and idiot for doing it this way, but we both think this is the best way to save money.

Which brings me to the goals of the swap. We want to save money and have some fun at the same time. We are a family of six, so yeah we could just buy a minivan and be done with it. But we both hate the idea of driving something so ugly and common. This narrows our choices of vehicles to an SUV. Since the biggest kid we have is 6'-5', we could not use a small SUV. This means that whatever we chose would have crappy gas milage. Enter the idea of re-powering with a 4BT. If we could keep the cost of conversion down to $3000-$3500 and burn a mix of biodiesel and pump fuel then we could pay for the conversion in about 25 000 miles of driving.

Since this car is now a daily driver, I collected parts for over a year, reading, planning, making a spreadsheet of all the chores I would need to do, parts to buy and try to imagine "what if" alternatives. I hoped I could get everything ready, then take a week off of work and get most of it done.

So here is the plan as it has unfolded so far:

4BT, CPL 858. I found this locally and purchased it with the starter and Ford transmission adaptor for $2 000. The stock engine is a 5.4L V8.

The stock transmission is a 4R70W automatic. To use this transmission, I would have to buy a different adaptor, rework the torque converter, and buy an aftermarket electronic controller. Or I could just use the Mazda M5R2 manual transmission that is so successfully used by others on this board. Since the cost of using the auto trans adds about $2500 to the job, and an M5R2 was $165 at the local U-Pull It, the choice was easy. Plus, I know of no one else can say they have a manual transmission Expedition.

I am using the stock transfer case. This is electronically controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which looks at wheel speed, front and rear shaft speeds and decides to engage the front wheels if there is slippage. While I would prefer to have a lever on the floor, this is a nice feature for my wife and family who will be driving in the snow. I was worried about the connection between the M5R2 transmission and the transfer case since I could only confirm from the data available in my manual and on the internet that both were made with 31-tooth splines. Average f250 told me they would bolt together without any modifications. This gave me a great deal of confidence to forge ahead-- Thanks Average!

The overall length of the M5R2 is within 1/4" of the stock transmission, so I may not have to change the length of the drivelines, Although the crossmember is not directly under the mount for the M5R2.

Use the stock gearing of 3.73 ratios with 235-80 x 17 tires (31.8" OD). This tire is about 0.2" taller than the stock tires and a little narrower. They are truck tires that can be inflated to 80psi, which should improve mileage some. I have been using them at 60 psi with the gas engine, but no measureable improvement. This will put me at about 1900 rpm at 60mph, which is acceptable to me. We do not drive 70 on the freeways (for the most part), so this is fine.

The ABS is critical to the function of the AWD, so I needed to use a vacuum pump for the stock brakes. I found a power steering pump / vac pump combo from a 6BT.

The AC is a must to keep everyone happy in the summer, so I plan to use a 6BT style "straight-out" water inlet and put the stock AC compressor in the original location, hopefully without having to open the AC lines.

I found a clutch pedal assembly, master cylinder, and remote reservoir from a 2000 F-150. There is a hole in the firewall in exactly the right place. I was able to remove the stock brake pedal and install the new clutch pedal assembly before the swap. I will use the normally open part of the clutch pedal position switch to communicate with the former auto transmission control that the trans is in "neutral" (clutch disengaged, switch closed, TCU thinks it is in park or neutral).

I found an intercooler that is 19"H x 24"W x 3" thick with 2-1/2" inlet/outlets. Plan to run 2-1/2" tubing from the turbo and to the intake manifold.

Add a 3200-rpm spring and leave the pump/turbo alone unless I think I need more power after driving it for awhile. The goal is good fuel economy with no degradation in driving performance compared to the gas engine. We don't tow anything, so this should be OK. Well----someday I think it would be cool to find a ski boat with a bad inboard motor and swap it for a 4BT, but that only exists in my mind right now (hope my wife does not read this).

I will use the engine oil pressure, water temperature, tachometer and throttle position sensor from the gas engine to communicate back to the ECU and to my stock gauges. I know that when I'm done I will end up with a "check engine" light. However, this only means that you should open the hood and check out how cool the engine is.

Here we go. Wish me luck.

Here is a couple shots of my latest conversion--a '28 Chevy, with a Isuzu C223, (NA), Volvo 4speed with O/D and a Nissan truck rear- the Chevy rears are notoriously weak.

I've finally made it home and to the garage a bit and I have updated my build thread at Pirate :skull:. There is still a lot of work travel in my future, but I do have some more vacation left this year and I hope to use some of it soon to get some more done in the garage. Basically the updates are related to the suspension installation. There will be some more in relation to the shocks and steering once I get some more parts in and some more vacation in ;)

Here is a link to the thread (should be in my sig)
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=529263

I also need to get my parents to take a few pictures of the 1986 Toyota Camry TurboD that I bought them. I drove it from Maine to Wisconsin for my first visit to see any of my family for over 2 years. I wish I had taken some more time and stopped by to see some of you guys along the way. Perhaps when I finish the Land Rover that can happen (like in 10 more years at this rate). I want to use the Toyota diesel in a future project, through the 2C-T may be more difficult to use than the 2L-T or 3L-TE. I don't think there are any rear-drive transmissions that attach to the 2C. Perhaps there is someone on here that knows. BUT that build will come after the 109, so there is plenty of time to find out.

If this should go in the "General Discussion" or somewhere else, please feel free to move it since I am kind of a jerk for not repeating my whole thread here...

After Garrett rolled the jeep, he decided he wanted a V8 gas truck. That didn't last very long. It has been sold and we have found a truck for our next Cummins swap. It's an 86 F250 Lariat. It needs a little work but should make a fun swap. Trying to decide whether to go 4bt or 6bt, what transmission to use, etc.
I traded some offshore fishing eqipment for the truck and we brought it home last night.
Can't wait to dig into it and spend some time working on another project with my son!

I recently purchased a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited edition with a 5.2 and a Frito Lay truck with a 4bt. Got a real deal ($400) on the jeep...

I recently purchased a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited edition with a 5.2 and a Frito Lay truck with a 4bt. Got a real deal ($400) on the jeep since the radiator and the reverse is broken; the brand new set of tires that are on it is worth that! I have dreamed about doing a swap like ever since I was a teenager. Unfortunately, I am a little tight on money, so I am planning on having to be creative in order to save money. Hopefully I will have no more than $4,000 in the project when it is all said and done. I plan on using a 4l60e tranny out of a 1996 s10 blazer since the 4bt currently has a th400 behind it now, and the bellhousing on the 46RH that is currently in the jeep is different from the dodge cummins bellhousing. I plan on wiring up the tranny to be shifted by pushbutton to avoid spending $1000 on a controller.

I noticed the other ZJs on here with 4bts have lift kits for motor/front diff clearance, but I am going to experiment with tilting the engine counter-clockwise (looking at the rear of the motor) to move the oil pan away from the diff. I know this is opposite the 20* tilt of the adapter plate and will rotate the transfer case even further down, but I can always make an adapter plate on the back of the tranny to properly align the transfer case if need be. Call me crazy for wanting to do this project so cheap, but after doing a ton of research, I think it can done. I know there is a ton of ifs that must be solved in order to make this project a success, so please do not hesitate to comment on my crazy ideas.

The main purpose of the jeep is to pull my Catalina 22 sailboat to the lake and the coast and get excellent mileage in the process. My boat, trailer and all weigh in at around 3000lbs. On a rare occasion, it will also be used to pull my girlfriend's two stall horse trailer which weighs in around 5000-7000lbs loaded.

Engine- 4-53 Detroit Diesel
Transmission- Allison 6 speed w/ 2 speed aux and 3 speed divorced. (36 gears)

Attachment 8577

Obviously its not a bone stock truck I'm going to build from scratch. The truck originally belonged to my grandfather who passed away in 1994 when i was only 2 years old. My mother inherited it and gave it to me. I'm now 18 and plan on going to college and building this truck at the same time.

Attachment 8575
Attachment 8576
If you are paying close attention to the picture you will see that it is dually. If you are familiar with old Dodges from the 70's there where no duallys well this is a Power Wagon on a 2 ton ford frame :)

The plans...
-full air ride suspension with 10,000 air spring (just cause)
-air brakes
-air starter
-air horns (thats all for the air)
-add a turbo (have no clue on sizing)
-put modern dodge hips on I might do mega cab hips
-larger injectors
-6 inch stacks out side of bed
-rockwell 2.5 ton axles
-1 ton transfer case
-mud tires and wheel spacers
-a sound system
