A 6bt would be tight. As for the gears it has 3.55 in it now but we have 4.10,3.73,3.08and 3.27,s laying around to try if the 3.55's dont work out. we are trying to use all the factory stuff we can so if we have a brake down we aren't woundering "what did that part come off of"

He's using the stock M5R2 (or maybe an older non-modular one). You should be very happy with the 3.55's and that tranny, 3200 spring with 31" or so tires. If you have tiny tires or cruise mostly 70+ the 3.08's might work better. I don't think you could break anything in that setup unless you were really trying.

Does anyone know if there is much difference between this 97 and a 99 as far as the modifications go? I have a 99 f150, 2WD, 5-speed manual that I am going to try and swap out the 4.2L and put in a 4BT. I am a newbie to this site and diesels in general so any info would be helpful.

I bought the truck new to just haul tools and be a daily driver to pull a few light trailers. It worked OK for that but it is a dog if you hook up to anything over a couple thousand pounds. I have a small tractor and that I have to unload off the trailer at the bottom of my driveway just to get up the hill to my house. The 4.2 V6 is just too weak.

i think they should have stuck with the i6, but the 4.2l would have been perfect in the ranger i think. last week i hauled around 40 pallets on a 16 ft. trailer and it was really bogging it, i guess 3.08 gears dont help also. but for a dd and light towing it does ok i guess

Why they got rid of the 300 six baffles me. They run forever and tow anything. Ford put the 300 in F-450's and it was pretty good for what it was. The little 300 will move 15K around like it has 100 more cubic inches. They also get great mileage if you gear them right. They need to cruise 2500-2800 and tolerate very lean A/F ratios.

    You answered your own question

Planned obsolescence is how auto manufacturers stay in business these days.

    Default 4x4?

I am planning to do the same swap on a 4x4. Any thoughts on how that will fit up? Any interference with the front axle?

Was any cutting/trimming around the firewall required to get it in there? It looks pretty tight!

It was a little tight getting it down in there with the motor mounts on it but it fits in there good as for the clearance in a 4x4 not sure I will try to get some pics of the front of the frame
