I have been collecting parts for my own swap. I think I have enough of them to finally feel good about getting the project rolling. If you want to see the engine running check it out on you tube. Search for "phills mercedes diesel". I hope to have some pictures of the project by mid summer.

Hulk: Do you have a few pics of the complete vehicle? I'd like to see how it is setup, tires, top etc. How is your gearing, are you running about 3,000 at 70mph?

This is one of the more sanitary builds I 've seen with this engine, looking seriously at doing a CJ7 after my 4BT project is done to use a daily driver.

I was impressed you were able to simply adapt the P/S pp, the Vac pp, and the A/C to the Jeep. I haven't seen anyone interested in creature comforts, and I think it is a big deal to have a vehicle you can stand to sit in for a long period of time, and be comfortable.

Keep us posted on MPG and any updates you make. I'm especially interested in a solution to the Cruise Control issue.

I like this Jeep.

You hit the nail on the head ..... this is the last vehicle I will own and I wanted ALL the creature comforts !!!

I am running 31" procomp x terrain tires on ( for now; 1" body lift ) later this week 2.5 inch suspension ( since oil pan is resting gently on the front diff ); I am running a 2 piece ( targa top ) hard top with sliding fiberglass windows for my half doors ( so they are removable ) !!
At the moment I have only got a fuel guage and a mechanical oil pressure ( 25 lbs at idle and 75 lbs cruising ) ... the speedo signal must have gone to the computer before the gauge and I cut out the computer ; the voltage gauge appears to be working ( i have no idea how or if it is accurate ) since I have not run the wire from the alternator to the gauge !! And temp gauge is not operating ; but I have an electric fan module that is controlling temp!!
I only got to put about 30 miles on it before the OIL LEAK reared its ugly head and it is a heavy oil leak from where the Injection Pump meets the block that will be fixed this upcoming week !! Probably from the engine sitting for 3 years before I picked it up !!! I had already changed the head and valve cover gaskets just to be on the safe side !!
The p/s was easy on the pressure side had to cut the mercedes tip off and the jeep tip off and install the mercedes tip on the jeep hose and double flare the end and plug back into mercedes pump !!
The a/c should not be that hard since the stock jeep suction line is a direct fit into the mercedes suction line port ; but the discharge hose will have to be made at a specialty hose making shop cause it has to go from the passenger side over to driver side to meet up ( the a/c compressor looks like a GM unit ) I will need to dump the R-12 oil out and refill with R-134a oil and connect to vacuum pump for a good 8 hours !!
Heater hoses at the mercedes water pump needed a 5/8 to 3/4 adapter to make that up and the return water hose was a direct fit ( it just needed to cross over the valve cover and I added a plastic 90 degree elbow to keep it from being kinked !!
The vacuum pump mercedes hose simply plugged into the brake booster and just happened to have a tee in it ( so I can run axle vacuum disconnect on dana 30 and HVAC controls !!
I need to contact a company called Dakota Digital to get my tachometer working also !!
NOW on the cruise control...... I am gonna get that last ; but I would have to pick the brain of my mechanical engineer friend ; since I have the wiring harness it should not be to bad !!!

I have no idea on fuel economy yet !! ( The guy I got the idea from says he is getting 32 mpg on highway and average 28 mpg combined ; and if he drives it like he stole it ..... 23 mpg ; but he agrees that 5th gear is useless) I am running 3.07 gears now and 5th gear is useless it drops the engine out of its power band !! I am deciding on 4.10 or 4.56 and ( eventually ) running 33 to 35 inch tires on the street and running thru DANA 44's front and rear ( but I have not installed the dana's or gears yet )!!

I chose this engine for its unbelievable longevity ; but I never would have believed it if I had not seen it ...... there is an 84 Mercedes OM617 car, just like my donor car, at the local pull-a-part with ...... 974,442 miles on the odometer ........and someone took the water pump and transmission out of it !!

so this is pretty comical: it appears that in order to stop spammers, there's a new rule where you can post an external link until your post count is at least 10.

well, it turns out my post count is currently only 6 :D which means I can't edit the above post until my post count goes over 10.

I'm going to put three most posts in here. hopefully I won't get in trouble with the mods.

3 more to go...

How does this perform? I want something to lug a 2WD '83 C10 around, preferably diesel, I'm seeing some 5 cylinder Merc engines pretty cheap, but can they pull that big a chassis?
