    Default 4BD2T Buildup

I’m starting a buildup thread. I know it’s just a standard engine buildup and probably not much that hasn’t been covered before, but I wanted to do something other than just ask questions. Turbo diesels are new to me. Maybe someone along the line will see what I’m doing and have some tips or tell me something I’m doing wrong.
My contributions will be if I can find a cheaper way, I’m going to do it and post up.
Also I’ll come up with something bizarre or out of the ordinary.

The 4BD2T will be installed in an 82 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60. I’ll probably cross post on the IH8MUD site when I start the actual installation.

A friend donated a 93 4BD2T engine to me. The vehicle it came out of was no longer around and had no history on this engine. I started it on the garage floor.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZpUJ...layer_embedded

I was surprised it even ran. It ran on two cylinders, but didn’t hear any knocks, so the engine seemed to be a good candidate.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
I pulled the drain plug on the oil pan. Strange, no oil came out. Pulled the pan off, and it hit the floor with a thud. It was full of thick gooey sludge. 2 gallons of the nastiest shit I’ve ever seen. There was probably enough pigment in one ounce of that sludge to tint 500 gallons of black paint. The engine disassembly was easy. It took days to clean everything up. Inevitably the shit got everywhere.

I found a couple of pistons distorted at the top and a scored liner.

I started pricing parts. The initial scare of the price of parts was shocking. I almost gave up on the idea of an Isuzu. I spent some time searching for the best deals I could on engine parts. Some of the deals are posted in this thread

    http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7381

Some great deals on parts came up, and costs didn’t end up being as much as first thought. One thing that helps is lots of machine shop services won’t be required. The local machine shop wanted $300 to change out the liners. I made a puller and pulled the liners myself, and installed them too

I knew there were some bad valves early on, but experienced a slight set back by discovering that the head was cracked.
Got a new head casting, a set of valves and assembled the head.

The head was quite reasonable at $300 USD.
For that price I'm sure that it's nowhere near genuine. It appears to be good quality though. No markings or labeling on packaging where it's from or who it's made by.

The oil inside my 4BD looked like that when I first drained it. It was the nastiest stuff I've ever seen... it stained everything.

    Nice rebuild so far!

Our '94 2-TC had goo like that in it, and a Prolong sticker on the passenger wind wing (ewww, BS in a can ).

I have replaced it W/ Delo 400 15W40 and replaced the Fram filter ( again) with a Wix.

Probably gonna change it again before the road trip.

    Engine is assembled.
A couple of odd things I ran across:

The manual flywheel is thinner than the auto flywheel where it bolts to the crank, requiring shorter bolts.

After lining up the timing marks on the gears, and rotating the engine a few times over, they never lined up again.

Now in the process of making accessory brackets and coming up with a turbo.

The timing mark deal had me curious, so decided to do a test run before the installation.

Looks like a good thread for me to follow. What are your intentions for a transmission?

Making some progress. Have been working on accy brackets. Since there will be no A/C, fabbed up a bracket for a saginaw PS pump and put it where the A/C compressor came off. The Isuzu had some kind of strange PS pump (that didn't come with the engine) that recessed into the timing cover. Had an aluminum disc machined to fill the hole in the lower left part of the timing cover where the old PS went.
Also made up a bracket for the on board air compressor.

The turbo was locked up. Pulled it apart and found the tips of the exh turbine blades missing and melted onto the outer housing.
Took a turbo off a Mitsubishi Fuso truck with a 3.9 diesel. Made an adapter out of 3/4" plate, ported it to match the intake and drilled and tapped it for the Mitsubishi bolt pattern.
In the process now of making oil lines for it.

There was hole in the actuator housing that I attempted to fix by welding up. Stupid move. Fried the diaphragm. Oh well, I'll just have to get a nice new adjustable actuator

Getting closer to installing the 4BD2T in the vehicle.
Got the Isuzudieselswapper adapter and the Downey bell housing installed. Built some threaded bosses for the slave cylinder to mount to.

The engine fit very well in the FJ60 Land Cruiser. No fitment issues at all.

It's all finally together. Just got back from 9 days on the road and traveling 2,000 miles. Drove from Florida, wheeled in Alabama, visited Nashville Tenn, and went to a Land Cruiser meet in North Carolina.
    The engine performed flawlessly!
It seemed to run best around 2100 RPM. We got on average 20.5 MPG running about 75 MPH at 2200 RPM. Ran it on veggie the first half of the trip till we ran out.

Even though it's my trail truck, I find myself driving it most the time now

    Some pics

That is gorgeous! Are you using straight veg or a biodiesel? I don't recall seeing your setup in the thread but I could have missed it.
