Mitsubishi 4D34

Just picked up one of these engines. It appears to be the same size and weight as a 4BD2T. It is also a 3.9L and has the exact same HP and torque specs. The obvious difference is the manifolds and IP are opposite sides of the Isuzu, so I'm pretty sure it's not a rebadged Isuzu.

I'm curious if anyone here has any experience with the Mitsubishi. Not much info on the net. I know they must be somewhat common as I see Mitsubishi Fuso truck on the road.
I'm interested in finding out if the bell housings and flywheels interchange between the Mitsubishi and isuzu or any other parts are shared.
Cosidering using it on a Toyota Land Cruiser project.

I should have took measurements and done some better comparisons, because I had them side by side at one time, but are now stored at different locations.

1st pic is the 4D34 and the 4BD2t side by side.
Other two are of the 4D34

We get a lot of smaller mitsubishi diesels here and their reputation isn't good. You don't see as many of their smaller trucks around, Isuzu has always outsold them new but lately there've been a whole rash of mitsubishi trucks built into new campervans.

The turbo on the two engines look almost identical, other than that I'd expect nothing to interchange.

Info Needed

hi i came across your thread on the 4d34 engine and i was wondering if you came across any more info on it. today i was given, for free ,an engine out of a mitsubishi box truck i just need to remove it and i want to do a swap in a pickup but not sure what one yet and im just tring to do some research right now before i purchase a pickup to do the swap in. biggest question im trying to find out is what transmissions come in those normally and what can mount up to them. so if you have found any info, the help would be great, thanks

I have searched all over the net to find out info on these engines and which trannys can be used. Didn't come up with much. Mine came without a transmission or bell housing.
If you get around to taking your bell housing off, maybe I could get you to take some measurements?

Yes, It would be a 4D34T then.
165 HP, Now that's impressive!!

It appears to be the same size and weight as a 4BD2T.
I have sent mail to Busbee Auto & Truck Parts - and they write me what weight of these engine is 1250LBS - it means 567 Kg - is it really true ?
Yes I'd expect that weight to be right, but you'd expect that to be a fully dressed engine. Full of oil, all accessories etc.
Hmmmm
I have read :
4BD1T = 327kg (721 lbs) dry weight - 340Kg wet
4BT = 395kg dry weight - 411Kg wet
Is the 4BD2T much heavyer ? or is with 4D34T abouth 227 Kg assesories ?

Starting to look into the best approach to adapt this engine to a Land Cruiser tranny.
My engine came without a bell housing. I sure would like to see what one looks like, and would really like to see what the depth measurement might be. Does anyone have a 4D34 bell housing they could take a picture of or even better measure?
I would be extremely grateful.

There is so very little info about these engines or these engines, or them being used for swaps. Found a thread on Pirate 4X4 from 2006 where someone had a 4D34 and was considering putting it in a dodge Ramcharger, but don't know if he ever followed through.

Mitsubishi Fuso 4D34

Going nuts trying to find any Fuso 4D34 info on the net. Doesn't appear anyone has swapped one of these into anything.
This is one last attempt to gather information or opinions on these engines.
Anyone know much about the Fuso 4D34 ?
Is it reliable and worth messing with?
Anyone know what a bell housing looks like?

I checked the decal on the engine. This model year (1992) is rated 135HP. Same as the Isuzu 4BD2T.

I had no background on the engines. I figured I had better check the condition of them before going forward.
Did a compression check on the Mitsubishi. All cylinders were equal at 340PSI. Glow plugs concerned me because they were covered in oil, but figured it could have been rolled around and possibly up side down. It fired up fairly easily and ran great.

The Isuzu looked like it hadn't run in years. Turbo was frozen, leaves and dirt in every opening of the engine, dirt an gritty oil in the engine. It took a long time to get started. I was just amazed it did actually run and didn't have any knocks. First it ran on two cylinders and eventually on three. Oil filter had a hole in it and puked oil all over the floor in the garage, so couldn't run it too long. It obviously should have a tear down and rebuild before being used. Too bad, it would have been the easiest to install with the available adapters being sold.

Looks like the Mitsubishi is the best candidate.

DI&EM

Direct Injection & Exhaust Management, perhaps?

Or Direct Injection & Electronically Modulated, Or Electroniclly Modfied?

All wild guesees on my part, just remembering on the Bosch CIS gas burner injection, they went to an 'electronic' correction system with that before they replaced the CIS system entirely with EFI (so that's where the Modualted / Modified comes from for my guess). Not the same no, but seems to be the tendancy (electronically modify the behavior of a mechnical system, till you replace it with electronic).
