I'm a little over the 7 mpg thing; so, I've decided to work on dropping in a 4bt. However, I am just getting started and wonder what the issues are.

Current Setup-
351w
C4
Transfer Case- stock dana
Power Steering
A/C

What would you do if you were me? What tranny bolts up and allows for a nice 2000 rpm cruise at 80 mph? (fastest you EVER want to travel in an early Bronco;) ). Also, how much should I budget for this project, assuming a reasonably nice used 4bt??

Thanks in advance!

If I get out of my bronco swap in the 7500-10k range I'll be overjoyed. BUT I'm in this for an "as new" truck, so I'll be rebuilding everything, axles, transmission, tcase, overdrive, probably the engine too, unless I find a really good one. So if you're content with used stuff you'll get out considerably cheaper.

The EB's wheelbase limits our driveline options somewhat, but most people are content to run a modern 5 speed anyway, so no worries really. The 4bt is a nice, albeit tight fit. The general numbers that get thrown around are 3.5" suspension 2" body lift. Even then you'll probably need to notch the front crossmember and possibly the framerail for crank pulley and starter clearance.

Here are a few bronco threads from here, might want to search "cummins" or "4bt" over at classicbroncos, few threads covering it there too.

will the np205 fit between the frame rails or do you have to notch it? i am trying to get all the piece together to start my 1970 4bt swap.

I am planning the same thing right now. I have put a down payment on a 4BTA, and I am going to use a Ford ZF transmission, and BC Broncos ZF transmission adapter kit to the stock Dana 20. I would like to avoid the 2 inch body lift but I don't think it is possible and I am going to see how it fits with a 2.5inch lift.

Keep searching to educate yourself. The thread below shows one guy way of fitting it.

My 4BTA swap.

I swapped a 4BTA into a 1989 jeep wrangler. I use a NV4500 transmission with a NP231 transfer case. I also swaped in Dana 44s diffs with ARB lockers 4.88 gears and 35"x12.5 tires. I have never gotten below 16MPH even when I've been rock crawling. On a a trip on the road it's close to 20 MPG. I love it you won't regret swapping if you do.
