4BT Should the A-Pump be Swapped

1008 Views 29 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Bwrmoto
I have a 4bt with an A-Pump that has the RQV governor on it. I know this is the better governor to have. My question lies because the injector pump is needing a rebuild and I am trying to decide if it worth it to change it to something else being most other pumps seem to have a lot more knowledge surrounding them.

Is your main issue on the fan the distance from the radiator?
Honestly, I am not even sure what the total problem is. I just know what another user went through and what he ended up doing in the end. For him he was saying that the factory 4bt and the Gates ones are between 1-2 inches off as well as hang to the drivers side too much to be usable. He started off using electric fans but on his engine it wasn't keeping up with the heat. I live in South Louisiana so it definitely gets hot here.
If it's the position and not the distance there may be another option. There are fan hubs that hang from the head instead of the block. These were found on the commercial engines. Those may put the fan too high. I suspect those wouldn't do either. Do you even have a fan yet?

I had ordered one but it came in way too big. I have since been looking at 3908077 and also 85-175
While I am on the subject of this engine. Anyone know where to get 3923004/3921689/3921688 fan hub assembly? I can't seem to find one even used anywhere. I know they were only produced for like 2.5 years.
Do you have a machine shop nearby? I needed that same fan hub and like you, couldn’t find one. My solution was to rough it in and have a friend with a lathe true it up and size it for the bearing. I used a short piece of 3” mechanical tubing and a small chunk of 3/4” plate.

Levis, do you have a picture of how yours turned out?

Thanks,

That fan blade 85-175 is the standard one for a 4bt but it and it's clutch unit 85-160 only fit the regular 4bt hub, not the Dodge ones. That pair is something around $540. Fan 3908077 is a non clutch type and again only fits the standard B series fan mounts. If you had one of the original Dodge center mount hubs, it wouldn't be hard to copy the housing. Would require some machining and welding. There is one made on the market but it's $375 which seems a bit high. You'd need a decent lathe and milling machine to construct the housing. The other parts you could buy or make. The bearing is a stock item so no biggie there.

I don't have the original fan hub that was on this engine. I was just talking to the other user that I have been following and he was saying that he believed the 4bt fan hub may work I would just need to move the radiator 1-2". That may be a whole lot easier to figure out then trying to have one made up. Especially with my very limited knowledge when it comes to that. The radiator I am currently using will be the one that I end up using with the 4bt and it shouldn't be difficult to move around.

Ed; not a very good one. It’s pretty well buried at the moment but when I take it back apart I can take a better one. -Levi
