About what does a 4BT weigh? is it too heavy for a jeep Cherokee? do you think I should look for something else, or do you think it's a viable option? Thanks

The engine 725lb dry , take a look around and search a bit ,there is a lot of info here .Has been done yj,tj,mj so on .

Thanks. the stock inline 6 is somewhere around 550lbs... you think the 4bt would require a stiffer suspension setup up front?

Yes. The 4BT is about the same weight as a 426 Hemi.

Other diesel choices:

A VM Motori 2.8 would be a better match - same as a Liberty CRD, it is offered in many Jeeps (and Chrysler minivans) outside the USA.
