Anyone know what the different bellhousing depths are good for. The sae 1 bellhousing on my engine has a depth of 3 3/4 for trans mating surface to inside and it used to have a torque converter hooked up to it. I’ve got a 6v53 sae 3 that won’t work on my engine and that has the same depth and was told it had a transmission behind it but wasn’t told auto or manual nor was it confirmed it was in a vehicle. I’ve found an 8v53 sae 2 bellhousing by miracle and it has a depth of 4 3/4. I looking to hook up a manual to it. Was wondering if this depth of 4 3/4” will work with a 14” pot style flywheel with clutch and manual trans. Thank you

Each sae size bellhousing has a matching flywheel. See the XG dimention in the attached chart. Measuring to the inside of the housing means nothing.

SAE Housing & Flywheel Dimensions
Below are listed standard Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) adaptation configurations. This configuration allows easy coupling to most diesel and gas engines which follow the same SAE standards. The following graphic shows the typical configuration and their respective SAE denomination:
Flywheel Measurements
To determine the SAE adaption in your specific application, simply match dimensions XD, XB, XE, XF and XG to arrive at a combination of SAE adaptations for the engine housing and for the engine flywheel, i.e.: SAE#1 Flywheel Housing with SAE#14 Flywheel.

Ok. I’ve been using that chart to dertermine what I need for a housing to go with the clutch housing on the transmission I want to use. A medium duty transmission either way with a sae 2 pattern. By some miracle I found the correct bell housing for the 8v53 I just wanted to make sure the depth of it wasn’t going to effect the connection of the input shaft of the transmission to the flywheel pilot bearing. I wasn’t totally sure that there wasn’t different depths to the bellhousing for different applications with detroit

found a bell housing online for an 8v53 with #2 pattern that was also set up correctly for my idler gear position. Amazed I found one so soon as all these parts are becoming so rare. $250 for the housing.

Next I need to finish cleaning the fuel system, already cleaned the pump, filter housing, lines, next is the fuel “rails” built into the heads. I’m gunna sand blast the inside of the bell housing before I bolt it on and run the engine so the surface rust doesn’t contaminate anything, obviously I’ll tape off the machines surfaces before I blast. Bought three different service manuals, a injector timing tool, cleaned up the injectors, bought one new injector rocker due to too much wear on the clevis bushing, dropped the oil pan and found no metal which was a relief. So it’s all steady progress to seeing this thing run.
