Ceramic Coated Piston Tops

Before I installed my 6BT in my pickup, I had a 6.5TD that I built with low compression pistons, ceramic coated tops, and graphite coated sides. Following polishing and porting, I had the combustion area and exhaust ceramic coated on the heads. The engine was balanced. Results>
The damn thing would scream and pull better than the cummins I have in now. With a marine pump, turned up, it ran to 4100 RPM laying rubber. Awesome power. No 6.5L I saw ever ran that good. No 6.5 I've seen pulled like it did. :smokin:However.
With only 44K, the pulley that attaches to the harmonic balancer separated rubber from metal, turnng the pulley into an impact hammer.
While I was in Iraq, my wife was easing around in it and it locked down. That pulley had vibrated things so, that it loosened #3 rod cap bolts. When I took it apart, there was no wear anywhere.
Before I built that engine, the 6.5 would get hot pulling. Following the modifications, I could not get it to overheat. I give the ceramic coating a lot of credit in heat reduction.
But with the Cummins pistons, I cannot see it necessary. The guys building them for pulling and racing haven't practiced it yet. When I see them coating for performance, I'll be more inclined.
I lost enough investment on that 6.5 I built to keep from doing it again for a while. I'm happy with my Cummins, knowing full well the only thing I need to make it scream like that 6.5 is a governor spring kit.
Pulls fine. I need it to last. Spring kit can wait, too

Forum Stereotye

Look beyond the forum stereotype.
The 6.5 ran super. Clearly longevity was poor. 44K indicates poor longevity. I am finished with 6.5L engines. They hold up poorly. However, the way that engine was built, it ran awesome. That engine. Not the stereotype 6.5.

The comparison was to the 5.9L in my truck now. Not anyone else's rig. My 5.9L has 325HP injectors and 4" exhaust, otherwise stock. It has OEM govenor springs, and stops pulling at 2200. Its a hoss up to that.

I alluded that all my Cummins needs is govenor springs.

However, THAT 6.5L pull hard from 1500 till 4100 RPM. With a load, it was a match to any hill. Did not overheat. Normally, that is not a statement that you can make about a 6.5L To grenade at 44K, despite the reason, is not complimentary.

The typical forum stereotype is that any Cummins will outpull a 6.5. But, stick enough aftermarket modifications on a 6.5L and it will scream. How long is not promised. That 6.5L had polished & ported heads, low compression pistons, ceramic coatings, was balanced, marine injector pump, high pop injectors, coolant upgrade and marine turbo. With all that, its pulling capabilty came from the RPM advantage above the 2200 over my Cummins.

The posting was about CERAMIC COATING. The information about a 6.5L liter was to state what ceramic coating would do, and was it necessary. At the end of my post, I suggested we look at those who race and pull, and are they doing it yet.

Do everything you can do to a 6.5L and it starts to do what a tame 5.9L does. While it defies the forum stereotype, it does state that ceramic coating can have an effect on a turd engine.
