Looking at what Im being told is an SAE #3 flywheel housing for an inline 53 series, still mounted behind a 453 in vehicle with trans, so I cannot get overall diameter measurements. However, I do have the casting number (8924577) and enough access to measure the "bolt center-to-bolt center" distance of the 12 bellhousing mounting bolts.
That distance is 4.375" (or very close to that), as measured with a digital dial caliper.
According to this chart below, that distance indicates an SAE #3 flywheel housing. However, an online search of "8924577" comes up with several FW housings offerings with that casting number advertised as SAE #4. Not sure if this just folks copying/pasting bad info, or ? I believe the bolt CL to CL distance for SAE#4 is closer to 4", and this one is definitely more than 4". EDIT: SAE #4 bolt center-to-bolt center, linear measurement ..as the crow flies.. is actually 3 7/8" (given 12 bolts spaced radially on a 15.00" circle).
Does anyone have a flywheel housing book that can check that casting number and confirm what it is ?
Thanks
