I am thinking about swapping the 4bt into my FJ40. It currently has a throttle body 350 that is on it's last legs. I have been acquiring parts, and I think it would be a fairly straightforward swap (It has NV4500 Chevy tranny, my 4BTA with a SM465 behind it... input shafts are compatible). I expect I would have to modify the oilpan and will have some firewall concerns.

I posted this plan over on the Landcruiser ih8mud forum (looking for axle advice) and got nothing but bad comments, such as "it will be too loud and nobody will want to wheel with you". It is also a commonly held belief that most of the 4bt swaps were sold soon after completion due to it not being a good candidate. I did not find a single person who actually had seen/ridden in one, much less owned one.

Granted that is a somewhat biased group, but in my experience they are open to good alternatives. Their opinions are based on something, but I haven't been able to determine what.

Is there anyone out there who has (or had) a 4bt FJ40, and can you offer some real input to the conversation? How much do you drive it, etc. These vehicles are all steel and have little to no sound insulation.

What I am really hoping to find is someone with some first hand knowledge. I have had this FJ40 for 25 years and I won't sell it... If I swapped in the 4bt and found it unacceptable I would remove it and swap in something else.

Thanks
Ted

Cruiser Innovations is on this forum and he has done them. The last one he posted was a 4.5 common rail engine. A 4bt should fit. I believe some guys have shoe horned a 6bt in there. Will it be noisy? Depends on what you consider noisy. I remember taking an FJ40 for a test drive back in the early 70's. Best I remember the only sound proofing was a rubber mat on the steel floor. The 4bt is not quiet by any means. May not hear the person talking in the seat next t you. The 4.5 CR that CI did is a bit quieter than the 3.9 4bt. Here's a link to one of his videos. He does nice work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fI3zorPCsA&list=PLBY3cfP_HPbLKI0yPhEicMP9CoKZSYNhJ

I am on the IH8MUD forum as well and must have missed your thread. Lots of people have bad misconceptions about 4BTs and their characteristics. Lots of people over there have strong opinions about diesel swaps without any first-hand experience to back it up. Please post a link to the IH8MUD thread so I can read it!!!

In my North Carolina based Land Cruiser club, Olde North State Cruisers, we have a growing selection of diesel Land Cruisers, both factory diesels (H, 2H, 2B, 3B, 1HZ, etc.) as well as two 4BT powered trucks, my own FJ60 as well as a FJ40. I installed my 4BT and helped with a number of aspects of the FJ40 4BT build I referred to.

Now, the 4BT FJ40 is louder than my FJ60, due to having no carpet or sound insulation at all. Insulation can be installed to cut the noise to some extent. I have a few videos of the 4BT FJ40 on my Youtube channel. Look for the "Martin's Burnout" videos as well as the individual links below:

Do you ever get down to the Raleigh or Charlotte areas? If you're interested, I could likely set up a meet with the owner of the truck in the videos above.

It would be worth the trip... can you PM me some info? Might have a reason to go down there soon, a guy down there is interested in some FJ40 wheels/tires I have up for sale.

A guy down in which area?

I'm in Durham, but my bud with the FJ40 is in Charlotte.

I'm with Johnny the 4bts in any of the FJs works well. I've done two swaps one into a 60 and one into a superduty. Both trucks are louder but that is just one of the trade offs for the many gains. Like he said a lot of people are just biased without even experiencing it, they don't mind hearing a gasser without mufflers but for some reason the sound of a diesel offends them. I think you should also not give up on mud, there is a lot of good info and helpful people there.
