I happened to have a pair of Ford manual transmissions sitting side by side in my shop so I snapped a few pictures for reference. The trans on the left is a ZF (smallblock bellhousing) and the one on the right is a Ford-Mazda M5OD (or M5R2). Aside from being much "beefier", the ZF seems to be slightly longer--I measured about 1/4". A few other distinctive characteristics of the ZF include diamond-shaped ribs on the side, PTO covers and a serial number tag on the left-hand side.

If anyone needs other info or measurements while they are sitting here, I'd be happy to help if I can.
