I’m no expert but maybe find a good rebuilder and have them go through it. You would then know it fits and works. Fwiw.

Wilhelm, do you have the engine serial number on that unit. If you do I should be able to look up the starter on Cummins site. The ID plate should be on the side of the front gear housing as in diagram below. Appears to be an SAE3 flywheel housing and the most common starters on those a Delco Remy brand. One common one is Cummins part 3916854 which is a Delco Remy model 28MT. Being a generator we might have to look in an Onan catalog for the part.

Well, I kind of struck out on this. I looked up your engine but no starter is on the parts list. The engine was built by Consolidated Diesel her in North Carolina but apparently the starter was provided by the end user. It shows the bolts to attach the starter but not that part. Is this by chance an Onan generator? If so, they may be the one who would have the starter part number. They are a division of Cummins. There would be an Onan ID plate somewhere on the unit with model and serial number.

I sort of suspected it was Onan from that blue green paint. 40 KW is a good sized generator. Cummins tech line was tied up. I'll try to dig into this tomorrow.

Thanks for your help in this matter, would love to make sure it's the right one though, will use their email to send them pics and see what they come back with.
Price: would you have a price indication?
Maybe there's other options?
Thanx again!!

Wilhelm, I got in touch with Cummins. Gave them your generator model #, serial #, and engine serial #. The starter motor is obsolete but they are looking to see what unit can replace it. I believe your flywheel housing is just a standard SAE3 so that shouldn't be a big problem. I also asked for info on the alternator. They are going get back to me via email. A waiting game now.

OK, got an answer from Cummins. Here are the numbers for the starter and I also the alternator.
The starter 191-2346 is orderable here: https://shop.cummins.com/CSSNAStore/s/product/a2w4N000003sQUNQA2/onan-starter-motor-1912346
To give you an idea, that starter is $636.28. Ouch! Found another source that had it for $832.95. That's insane. I've looked but haven't been able to find an aftermarket replacement so far. Did some research and found a cross reference at Dixie Electric that show their part 260-62138 as a direct replacement. Here's a link to their site. https://dixie-electric.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/260_DEL_000.pdf Haven't found a price in the US so maybe you could contact them to see where it is sold. They have a toll free 800 number.
The alternator 191-2326-01 is orderable here: https://shop.cummins.com/CSSNAStore/s/product/a2w4N000003sQEWQA2/onan-alternator-12v-65a-191232601
The alternator price isn't so nuts. Found it for $288.24. I did find an aftermarket replacement for that one for $181.01. Here's that listing on ebay 66021601CS Alternator Fits 8689 Onan 0191-2326-01,191-2326-01 | eBay DB Electrical has one on Amazon for $74.21. https://www.amazon.com/Alternator-0-120-488-205-SE501835-39206791-0120488205/dp/B0096PXMWS That's starting to sound more sane.

Wilhelm, got a reply back from Riverside Alternators and Starters. They say they have the Onan starter 191-2346 for $195.30. Sure beats $600+. Here's their reply.
Good morning Charles,

Thank you for the additional information. We have Starter Onan 191-2346 available for $195.30. It is 12 volt, 10 tooth, and wet sealed. It fits Cummins 4BT. I have attached a picture of the unit for your reference. Our technician still recommends sending pictures of your original front, side, and rear to verify this is exactly what you need.
