Discussion Starter #1
Hey, everybody! This is my first post, I drive a 1980 Toyota Land Cruiser with a 4BT conversion and I spent a couple of hours taking the starter solenoid apart this AM to troubleshoot some intermittent starting problems. It turns out that the starter must have ingested water at some point and sat for a while, it was pretty crusty in there.

I am going to try rebuilding this one to keep as a trail spare but, since my Cruiser is a daily driver, I also want to buy a new one.

My newbie question is, how do I know what year the engine is, and what are the serial/reference numbers I'll need to provide to get the right part?

Are there by any chance any online sources? I'm going to be swamped at work for the next 2-3 weeks, so if I can get a part online or over the phone, that would save me a lot of grief.

Thanks in advance, looking forward to some discussions here! I've had the Cruiser converted for a year now but I still haven't started playing with any performance tweaks, strictly daily driver.

Cheers!

Here is a crossreference from the yahoo groups section. Your manufacturing date will be on the data plate of your motor. This is located on the side of the front gear cover. It will tell you everything you and your parts guy will need to know. You should have no problems finding a starter with this cross.
