How many of you guys have swapped main shafts to go from 2 to 4 wheel drive? How hard was it? Do you need special tools? Any one have a downloadable service manual?

You need the mainshaft socket to match the version of NV4500 you have and you need good snap ring pliers. If you don't have good snap ring pliers you can use a torch to remove the more difficult snap rings and buy a small parts kit that comes with new ones. You should torque the mainshaft nut to 325 lb/ft, but if you don't have a torque wrench that size you can figure 200 lbs jumping on the end of a 3 foot cheater is about the same.

NV4500's are very simple. There are no tricks or suprizes to them.

If you need a book quad4x4 sells one, but it is not at all necessary. The only thing you need to know is main and counter clearance which are both .002"-.010" with .002 being preffered. They work best at .002-.004.
