what are our smaller engines designed to operate at? 160 was the temp in my 6-71n but my gama 3-53 had a 180 in it. I ran it about 85k with that temp stat .When the water pump started to leak ,I replaced the rad ,pump and thermostat back to 160 It runs better at 180 as it smokes blue til warmed up

They were designed to run with the 170 degree thermostat from 170-187 and with the 180 thermostat 180-197. I'm running a 170 in my 4-53T and it stays around 174-186. In the winters I run winter fronts and that helps with warming it up and keep in warm, especially city driving. How many miles on your engine since last overhaul?

the 3-53 in the ranger has over 100k on it in 6 years and is tired . it still starts ok in the winter with a small hiss of ether in the morning and is ok the rest of the day but it uses a lot of oil the 6-71 in the brig is overhauled every 6 years as it runs around 200k I have done 3 inframes on it It still has the 160 thermo in it
