I believe 1st I'll what section should I have ave this question in. I read through several &Didn't find what I CONSIDERED WAS THE CORRECT LOCATION.
SO It was about 45 degrees outside today . I cranked my Haul Truck to move a very small load. WheN MY TRUCK CRANKED It was blowing white smoke. . & THEN WHEN I went to back it out .. It seemed like it was missing.
& I got it in the driveway & I was amazed at how much white Smoke .. ABOUT 100 YARD UP MY DRIVEWAY i STEPPED OUT & WALKED AROUND TO THE EXHAUST ... I wanted to smell & make sure it smelled like fuel. It did.
........SO wHEN I got to the end of the drive I turned around & brought it back to the house . I felt it was going to die several times.
But I got it back home & Left it .. Jumped into another Jeep &got a small trailer & Got my choir done .
WHEN I GOT HOME a good hour later .. I needed to move the haul Truck & It cranked & Not one drop of smoke . Ran great& I drove it down the country road. Not an issue one .. I'll say it ran perfect.
It's got 365.000 mile on it.
It's had one rebuilt Fuel injection pump put on it when I bought it. At 165000. & It still has the Lift Pump that bolts onto the side of the motor .. I'm sorry I worked at a Dodge Jeep & Chrysler stearership for 10 years .As SERVICE ADVISOR.
... I don't believe in the in-tank fuel replacement pump. We worked on 100 diesel pick-ups a week..
I'm going to say I've been around a lot of Diesels .
.... But I don't remember any coming in with just this symption ..
It did not set a check engine light .It gets a new fuel filter about once a year normally in
Late October. AT ABOUT 5000 MILES.. & I'VE PUT IN NO FUEL FROM 5 gallon can. All form what we called the cleanest station in our town. But a lot changes in 10 years .
........... SO Anyone have a thought of what's gone wrong with my truck.

White smoke is diesel not burning cleanly in a cold engine. 45 deg wouldn't be considered extremely cold. The miss may be a misfiring injector. If they are original to the engine they may be ready for replacement or a rebuild. Does you engine have the intake heater? It's possible that has stopped functioning.

OK Char I'd not thought of the grid heater not function .. But that sure could have been it.
I didn't wait for the Wait to start light to go off. I just grabbed the key & Nailed it.

I'LL SAY NOT YET.
I'VE BEEN WAITING TO UPDATE ... Because I don't think I have all the answers yet.
........But since you ask ...I'll go ahead & up-date you Guys somewhat.
SO It ran bad one more time .So I got my codes read & I had the dreaded CO216. & CO230..
& The TPS Timing code....
So I went to the kid that's been working on what I have to take into town. But I wasn't sure he'd worked on enough Diesels .. It like sure I can tear it apart ... So I called an old buddy that I worked with at Chrysler & He'd be 3 or 4 weeks getting to it. So he didn't want me taking it to the1st kid. He'd messed up on ofthe Voluntary Fire Trucks for our area.
... So I checked another place in town .& Their guy had only replace 2 in his times. & That place wanted 1100.00 to just replace the Injection pump .
..... SO I Have another young man that was a customer before I retired. & He has a tractor of mine in his home shop now replacing the motor . In it. But he said He's done about 15 of these jobs this year. & I KNOW A LOT OF THEIR JOBS they do are A fleet of about 15 Big18 wheelers..
& trac hoes & dozers & big farm tractors . & He said bring it to him & He'll put in front of my tractor . & Only 750.00 LABOR ... SO I took it into Abilene Injection . & purchased a new Rebuilt pump & a lift Pump & 6 new injectors ..
But it was to be drop shipped to the truck shop on I20 ..But it's 2 days late now ..
Normal Crap, I'll check on it tomorrow.
............& I'll up-date again after I know more.
This Abilene Injection shop Is the place I bought all my Diesel items back when I had my parts store....
I've probably used them for 35 years . .& Always had good luck.

Bad injection pumps and especially lift pumps were a constant problem in the 24 valve engines. Seems like there was a revision done in the injection pumps for the last year or two that helped those. Lot of the injection pump woes were caused by a weak lift pump.

Yes when I worked at Chrysler.. No injection pump got replaced with out a new Lift pump.
........ THAT Company also only believed in the new pump that went inside the fuel tank.
While I do feel it's really a better pump. I don't believe in using it . I still prefer the pump on the side of the motor , Because it can be changed in the side of the road out at the ranch in New Mexico. ... IT WOULD BE REALLY HARD TO REMOVE THAT FUEL TANK on the side of a mountain. Among the Rocks.
..... SO NEXT UP-Date.
this morning I got a call from the mgr. of the NAPA in my old Parts store... He says he has my parts at my old store.
The rebuilder drop shipped my Injection pump & My injectors to the wrong location ... But they knew me & called me & I went & picked them up this AM.
& TOOK THEM to the young mechanic.. Back in business in a few days.

OK Guys here's my up-date ... 12-28-22 & I got my truck back today..
He ask do you have a Chip on your old truck.. HE SAID I wasn't expecting it to run as good as it did when I got it going.
So when I got in & took off ..Yes it sure did run better than it was before it went down.
I can't wait to get to check my fuel mileage ..
SO $2400.00 LATER For injection pump & about 230.00 for the loft pump. & 6 NEW INJECTORS WERE $672.00. & HE Did an oil change for me also
$1100.00 FOR HIS LABOR.
He's also doing a motor swap on a Ford 3000 & 841 tractor for me . He said it's running but not ready to go home until next week sometimes.
... I put those prices up just as a reference .. I'm in central rural area . Different parts of the country Prices are different .& This was done in a small shop Not at a big shop .. I mIGHT & i MIGHT NOT ACTUALLY HAVE A WARRANTY.
BUT I LIKE THE DEAL I'VE got today.

OK KIND OF Another update on my diesel truck .
My truck is now getting worse mileage than It did when all this got started.
I've owned this truck since 2004.
This is the 3rd injection pumps on my truck .
My truck has 365000 miles on it .
Stock pump lasted until about 149000.
I had that pump rebuilt in 2004. & it lasted up until now 2022 & Now I have about 364000 on the truck. It was getting from about 14.5 up to maybe 16.3.
2nd pump went bad about 364K.
& I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SAME Shop because I'D HAD A PARTS STORE FOR YEARS & THIS REBUILD SHOP Always did me a good job.. IT's sold out to M&D injection a nation wide firm.
But the old people were still there & Remembered me.. SO I had my pump exchanged for a different pump that was rebuilt & my old pump was used as a core . I bough new rebuild pump & a new lift pump that bolt on the side of the motor block like they original did. & I bought 6 new Injectors original style .. Not bigger Horsepower ones.
But my mileage has even went down again instead of up... Today I got 13.3 Of a combined driving tank of short trip from my home in the country& into towns . This tank was mostly a set of 20 to 40 miles trips with 60 mph trips .
Man I'm disappointed with this mileage....
Now later this week I have a trip that'll be about 325 miles Mostly 75 to 45 mph driving .
. & It'll be about 80% 70mph trip.
SO I'LL CHECK AT THE END OF THAT TRIP. after I get home &see it it getbetter next trip.

Yes, your mileage does sound a bit low. Even your original mileage wasn't that great. A friend of mine had a truck in that vintage and he consistently got in the 18-20 MPG range for just general driving. My old Ford IDI could only muster around 16-18 and that high number was with a strong tail wind. LOL. He lived here in North Carolina but traveled a lot to Arizona for vacations. He'd haul a 4 wheeler in the bed and tow a 27 foot trailer and still could muster 16 MPG on the interstate. With mine fully loaded I could do around 14-15 so he was always about 2 MPG better than me. Of course he was feeding a 5.9 and mine was a 7.3 and the Cummins is far more efficient.

I sure hate to say I'm very disappointed . & I live in flat land. I wouldn't think that in a tank full of fuel I'll not change elevation 100ft. My tires are in good shape & will maybe be one size overstock. like 265R16 Over 235R16s.

Reading and responding to your update a little late... have you tried any fuel additives? try running cheap atf in your fuel, I use it regularly in all my diesel motors, keeps them running smooth...

Problem with trans fluid is that it is generally RED meaning most DOJ inspectors would think its off road diesel on road, thus a fine...unless there is an on the spot test too confirm what it is...

2 cycle oil @ ~ 150-1 works well for me, I go closer to 200-1 in the winter as it gets pretty cold here.

Hey Papitt...On fuel mileage of your 24v....did you re-use the inj pump shaft key from old pump or did the rebuilt pump come with one ? I ask because each pump is static timed with an offset key different degree's. Yes, the pump is capable of advancing timing but if pump is off say 2 degs and the ECU requests 6 degs advance....well you would have either 2 degs more than requested or 2 deg's less than requested. Otherwise always off 2 degs one way or another, if that makes sense.
Just a thought. Or has your fuel quality changed recently, besides the lower grade winter fuel ?

Yes I've used a lot of additives ..
While I worked at Chrysler they wanted us to put a bottle of Cheap 2 cycle oil in the tanks of any truck we put an injection pump on. They didn't want the 2cyl oil to be Synthetic. & They told us if customer insisted on using ATF DEXRON IV to tell them to not use synthetic.
..... But do I need additives yet. I might have 2000 miles on my truck now. I replaced the injection pump lift pump & All 6 injectors ...
NOW I don't remember if I've reported my last fill up here ... Last week I took it on a long trip with mostly cruise driving in flat west Texas . & i FILLED UP At my return 240 miles & For the 1st time in 18 years I got my Best Mileage ever. I got 19.98 mpg... THAT'S filling the tank to the same spot on my filler next in the tank... Even one Shake of the truck side to side & Waiting about a minutes for it to settle. & PUT A 2 Top off. I believe I got it topped as equal as I can get it. &The same. Fuel station & even the same pump. So as I'm the same level not slanted .
.... Now here's a funny story on additives & my efforts.. Since I'm an old Parts man ... I truly don't believe in additives .
I pretty much believe their Snake Oil. SO As far back as my stay with Chrysler . & I was requires to sell some additives from time to time. SO I tried everything I could find .
Before Chrysler I drove from Parts STORE to Part Store for Parts Plus & I worked with a lot of other Snake Oil sell repersitives . But while driving for Parts Plus I drove my own trucks . SO I Bought a used 1987 BroncoII V6 & 5 SPEED. 2 WHEEL DRIVE ..That thing had about 200000. when I bought it.. I gave $500.00 for it. & I only bought it too fix & sell... After getting it running for maybe 200.00 I liked it So I BOUGHT A SET OF WAL-MART TIRES.
After a few tanks of gas about 18 mpg. Most of the time. So I added in some Lucas fuel treatment. better .SO i'M GOING TO SAY I out a bottle in every other tank of fuel. I used everything Our stores sold. Berryman . STP. some CRC. SEA FOAM .. LOT of people said it was the best .. But I that to say in the winter STP did the best other than Lucas .. Rislone another of my favorites. Techron, Gumout ,Howes fuel treatment. & WAL-MARTS SUPER TECH.
& i'M SURE I'VE tried a dozen more ... In that BroncoII & iN ALL my Diesels trucks .
& On my last job I got stuck with an old salesman I'd known for for 35 years . But he'd changed jobs & was selling just a big truck fuel treatment ... My last job wanted me to take him to all our good customers. HE WAS A PUSHY salesman & ABOUT PISSED OFF most of my accounts. I'd had that happen before..
But his product he wanted to sell my big accounts that had 200 big diesels trucks or more.. Not one accounts bought ... I laughed my butt off .. but he was trying to sell a ... DOSER INJECTION SYSTEM THAT PUT IN SO MUCH ADDITIVE INTO EACH GALLON OF FUEL ..Gas or Diesel fuel. I kind of hoped we could sell 2 of my accounts systems because . I was thinking those 2 system could almost be so big .. I could just about retire on them .
But no way... SO YES I'VE Played with additives just about more than anyone else I know .
99% ARE SNAKE OIL.
