I ran a mod car in the 70's and still have two winters quick change rears. They have a 4:11 ring and pinion and use two gears in the back housing to change the final ratio. there is about 32 spur, rear gear sets to go from less than 1to1 to about 7.28 they are 3/4 ton size and you can't break them I had 500 something hp ,ran them 15 years and never hurt them,,other then crashes I have been thinking about using one of them in the ranger build, as they are lighter than a regular rear. they are magnesium and use 3/4 ton size hubs and bearings . you can put the center of the housing any where you want just with the length of the axle tube and have disc brakes, ps parts are cheep for them compaired to a regular truck rear ,and you can gear them any ratio that you want

yes the quill shaft goes in the bottom, lower than a regular rear. the rear housing has two spur gears to change the ratio. 32 sets are available The one pictured has sprint car type axle housings. The two that I have have regular 3 inch tubes like a standard rear. You can get or make any length that you want , and disc brakes have been standard for a long time and are cheep Back in the 60-70's we used buick alum drums for stopping power as only the rich guys could afford disc brakes. but now, disc are king pick your flavor, ford chevy, etc. stay away from aftermarket, as the prices are high.
