im wondering if its worth doing, if it will work etc.. i have a 98 S10 Zr2 and i was wondering what it would take to swap in a 4bt. its 4wd and auto, i would like to change it to 5 speed if possible too, seeing as this would mostly be a mud truck, and to tow my yfz's to races. Also wondering approx what someone would charge to do the swap?? im prepared to spend the 3 grand give or take on the 4bt, but what else would i need? I also have full skid plates on my truck, i wouldnt have to do anything to them would i? cause i loveeee my skid plates

it's doable, but actually there are also other engine options that could fit easier in the s10, not needing too many changes on the suspension due to the engine weight...
Depending on your route I would be prepared to spend more then 3 grand. I have 3500 wrapped up and that's using the same tranny out of my truck and totally recycling an aluminum step van. It's all the little things that are hard to plan.
Hi there it is doable I have a 97 zr2 that was auto and now is a 5 speed I have a 4bt in my garage waiting to be put in I broke my arm yesterday so the project is on hold but I'm hoping to finish it by the new year after I compleat it i can give you all the details you will need and I would be willing to do the swap for you after I do mine the price would depend on how hard it really is but I will let you know as for doing a 5 speed swap it's easy as pie
The Zr2 is the swap I wanted to do 4 yrs ago. the price of decent trucks and the tight under hood clearance issues with the air cond./heater box and firewall to core support lead me to do a Dakota instead. The clearance with the front drive is something I didnt look into. May require a SAS. What a truck it would make!!!bounce

What trans did you use for the 5spd swap? Keep the factory (np231) transfer case and driveshafts?

I have a buddy of mine doing this exact conversion and it is VERY involved!
He's using the stock 4x4 transmission and has the oil pan all done.

I do know that he had to totally remove the dipstick and he's using a Chevrolet one that welds the stick receiver to the oil pan.
He's also had to channel the very top of the passenger's frame rail to get extra clearance, I believe for the turbo.

I'll go over there to-morrow and snap some pics of the mess.

Mark this is an old thread and may not get a response, I would like to see the picks as Ive not given up on a ZR2 swap. Also another thread was started recently with some S10 questions also so the interest is there.
Egads! You're right, this topic does have some gray hair!
I'll get some info and some pics, if it's possible.
He may well have it installed so it's harder to document.

Someone made mention of their being easier diesels to swap into a GM S-10 truck. I am interested in this, as it is the next phase of my rig.

I have a 1989 S10 Blazer 4X4, but I did a solid axle swap so I've moved the front axle forward 3.5" and I do believe all of the maor challenges to a diesel swap are gone- the front diff and so on. The only thing that remains is the heater box on the passenger side, and the steering arrangement, which honestly is easy enough to work around by way of an interstitial shaft and bearing, should it be needed.

So- the question basically becomes: what diesel engine is easiest to bolt to a 700R4 transmission without having the width issues of a 6.5/6.2 deisel? I am looking at the Mercedes OM617 family, Cummins 4BT, Isuzu NPR truck engines, and that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge.

Interconnection to the hydraulic system misn't a huge concern, as long as the hydro pump has enough flow to support steering AND braking, as I converted to hydroboost brakes when I did the SAS, as I knew Phase Three would be going diesel and thus I wouldn't have enough vacuum to run the OEM brakes (to say nothing of the poor braking performance when I went to such a larger wheel cylinder bore).

If anyone is interested, I am running Wagonner Dana 44's front and rear, 33" tire, minimal lift of approx 7".

yes stock tranny and case etc. im almost done with the swap im on the motor mounts now and the tachmeter if anyone know how to hook up the tach i could really use the help

and im dieselrocks92 i just forgot my user name and password so i made a new one
I would think that the tach would be most easily addressed by way of running an alternator referenced-tach wire. I have seenthis done, will see if I can find something for you.
