I'm going to put a Spicer 3053A on my 4bt. I have a Chevy adapter on the engine presently and also have a SAE#3 bellhousing pn2043259. My question is which way is the best way to go put a chevy bell housing on the Spicer or change the adapter to the SAE? I'm installing this set up in an M37 Dodge. The starter hole is low on the drivers side on the SAE which will be a tight fit.

Well, I broke down and bought the way 2 hogh adapter for the 3053a sae#3 to sae#2 for $500 plus. The flywheel and clutch is a FL-80 1996 freightliner with a 5.9 and six speed Fuller. I am going to have a custom clutch disc made and figure out what crankshaft bearing wil fit the 1 1/2 spicer 3053a transmission. The flywheel housing is a SA@ #2 made in china for $350, the flywheel is a 14 inch for $300 for the FL-80 freightlinner. Does anybody know what crankshaft bearing I need to buy or have a list of different bearing sizes and parts numbers?? I now must find the part number from the Freightliner for the clutch slave cylinder and brakcet so i can buy it new and adapt it to my powerwagon. I have the driveshaft to the transfercase figured out finally as well. Will be posting pictures up soon. I ran into a guy that told me the 5 ton 5 speed spicer is sae#2 and would swap out with the 2 1/2 ton spicer 3053a with the sae#3 bellhousing, i still have 3 more spicer 3053as and want to confirem this, seems to me i been better off just buying a 5 ton sae#2 spicer housing and swaping it on my 3053a to avoild that too hogh adaptwr, the 5 ton transbells are $200 and if i just knew where to find out if they interchange now?? Anybody??

I just checked out that link you posted back in post #51. I wonder if the guy ever figured out that the transmission he got is a non-OD unit :rasta:

I am not following the od part of that swap, those fullers come both way in od and in direct, seems to me he has made a direct into a od by swaping out some parts with another fuller that he just subsituted the needed od gears and shaft, a real truck tranny shop can do this all day long, trick is to find one!!!!lol I WISH i was next door to one for sure, then i just try to get a fuller in sae 2 to bolt on the front of my old spicer aka now dana aka now fuller 3053a spicer sae 3 for the m35. I am still waiting on the 5 ton clutch housing off of a M54 5 ton army i bought to see if it bolts on the spicer 3053a to avoid the $600 adapter for my next swap, this one is about over, all i need to finish a the Freightliner FL60 parts book i ordered from San Antonio Texas Freightleiner Rush Dealer to arrive so I can order the front engine mount for the 5.9 used in the freightliner and the master clutch resovior for the firewall, the hoses, the master clutch slave cyliner and mounting bracket, all of which will be avaialble from Freightliner anyehre in the usa with my parts numbers i willl be posting up soon as well as the phone numbers and parts numbers of the made in china Cummins replacments for the SAE2 @ flywheel housing $300, sold in San Antonio Brake and clutch and the matching 5.9 cummins replacemnt SAE #2 flywheel made in China, $250 new, the clutch disc will be made to fit the 1 1/2 dia the 3053a spicer has and will be in 14 inch dia for. So what does this all mean, anybody now who wants to use a 3.9 or 5.9 can simply order the parts from an aftermaket truck parts house and also the Freightlliner dealer itself and only need a custon clutch disc made up and i still need to figure out what cranksaft bearing is needed frot he spicer 3053a insput shaft when installed in the cummins 3.9 or 5.9. When i take my old sae #3 spicer 3053a 13 inch clutch set up to San antiono brake to supply the new required 14 inch clutch for the sae #2 Freightliner FL60 set up i will have matched up, all then needed is to get all stuff ordered in from Freighliner for a 98 Fl60 with a 5.9 cummins with 5 speed fuller with 14 inch clutch set up hydralicly. Getting close for sure

You might be able to find a starter if you can measure the offset between starter bolt centers and the pinion gear. I cant imagine the difference between a dodge and SAE 3 is that far off(2"D at the most). If this distance is greater, you will as stated above, need another flywheel. Also pinion gears come in many tooth counts as well as pitches. I would think between the offset pinion starter and variety of pinion gear sizes it is possible. I would try this route aggressively as it will be cheaper than purchasing a SAE#3 flywheel. My 2 cents.

Paul (Chansey) and others who do the conversion use SAE #2 housings, not #3. Here's the page: http://www.sanco-bg.com/Conversion_NV5600.htm

I remember you and I talked about maybe running an SAE #3 on the 6 speed Fuller using the bell from a 5 speed. I did a little research (by no means comprehensive), and found out the biggest obstacle would be a clutch. I found no off-the-shelf 13" clutches that fit a 1-3/4" input shaft. South Bend an others could make one, of course. Second potentially larger problem is that, if I am not mistaken, the 1-1/2" input shaft normally used in the SAE #3 setups is sunstantially shorter than the 1-3/4" shaft, which means the bellhousing is shallower as well. Thus, if the bell was put on the 6 speed trans, the 1-3/4" shaft would stick out too far.....

I really wanted to put a 6 speed Fuller in my truck, but in the end I decided it was too much trans for a vehicle as light as mine.

Apologize for the incorrect information. MaxPF is correct and I will correct post.

What spline count input on the 205, chevy 10 or 32? How did you couple them together, splinewise? I was going to have a 3053 output shaft resplined to 31 Ford and marry a 205 right behind it. .69 would be nice, pricey tho.

Don,
I had trouble finding a flywheel to suit the SAE 3, found a SAE 2 and had it turned down to accept the SAE 3 ring gear (159 tooth).
Found the ring gear online.
It was dual drilled for clutch covers but the ring gear cut through the outer bolt holes.
The inner holes matched up to the clutch cover I had. Clutch was from an International with Roadranger transmission Have the numbers stashed somewhere
Cheers Steve

I found the Cummins 3935205 flywheel for $495, but I ended up buying 3973746 for $209 shipped.

Then I bought a stock NOS M35 clutch ($45) and pressure plate (11621375) ($100).

I think I can have the Cuymmins flywheel drilled to fit the bolt patter of the M35 clutch cover.

I suspect this will give me a very stiff clutch pedal in my 3/4-ton WWII WC Dodge. I am considering having the springs changed in the M35 clutch by an old school clutch rebuilder. I figure I should adjust the spring force according to the ratio of the pedal arms in my Dodge and the deuce. In other words, the deuce has a longer pedal arm than my Dodge, so I need to lessen the spring force to match my shorter pedal arm.
