In my rangie, the clearance issue is the lower corner of the block and the front diff head. This is with a RHD vehicle where the steering box is above the diffhead and the engine is moved to the left.
With LHD you may have more issues with having to move the engine to the right, creating more engine/diff clearance issues.
There was someone on pirate who knows of a LHD defender with a 4BT. Have you got many other past conversions to look at?
