I used searhc terms ZF 542 and 547 and came up with nothing, so I'll ask. After spending a great deal of time looking for a NV3500 through junk yards and car parts stores it became appearnt that (at least where I live) the NV3500 isn't terribly common used, so I decided that the ZF's might be a better option, does anyone know how expensive (round abouts) a 542 or 547 is used? And how much would an adapter to a 4BT cost?

The model names are ZF S5-42 and S5-47, not 542 or 547. That may be part of your problem. The small block ZF's are common for a few hundred dollars in working shape in my area. The adapter parts are typically $4-$500 with shipping on ebay.

The NV3500 is not a common transmission. The vast majority of GM trucks have been automatics since the 1970's.
