Hey everyone, I’m trying to get some help with some ideas and best mods. I’m currently on my third deployed to Iraq and I’m having Bent Metal Customs in Washington swap my engine over to the 4BTA. I’m hoping when I head home my truck will be finished. Over the next month and a half I will be updating this thread with the progress Bent Metal Customs makes.

The engine I bought is a 2005 4BTA 130HP CPL 1839, I’m planning on using a Dodge Getrag 360 I bought off Ebay with a Ford NP205.

My plan is to get feedback from you guys on the site for ideas on best gauges, axle ratio, fan setups, vacuum for power steering, air conditioning, governor spring, top mount intercooler heater hoses. Ect

I’m from Colorado, im just stationed in Washington. I called the Colorado state DMV department they told me as long as the engine is newer I can swap all I need is a Vin verification then go down to my county DMV and change my title to diesel

we really need a little more details on your truck:confused: as in what are you going to use it
for a daily driver or a toy part time driver.
are you using stock running gear axles etc.
are you lifting it if so what size tires ?

I would say for a daily driver I would run around a 354 ratio on gearing
as far as turbos and fuel mods search the treads their is a ton of options and info.
look up Scott (ie Crew Cab 59) for engine info fuel mods etc he has a lot of exp with the 4bt
and can probably tell you more than you ever need to know:D
as far as gauges I have ISSPRO in my Y2K 24V and like them pretty well
good luck keep us posted I want to see pictures.
and thank you for serving our county bounce

The truck is going to be my daily driver, I’m using the Toyota Tacoma rear end with E-locker, and I had a diamond axle put under the front using a FJ80 high pinion dif. I’m running 4.88s now, 3.54 would be really hard to find for my axles. I have about 7” of lift and running 35” tires

with the winch and the 4bt your front end is gonna be heavy.Good thing you got the diamond.Any Bobby long longfields? Are the newer tranfercases driver side?Or do you have the some strange transfercase.

#13 ·
the V6 toyotas have a chain drive driverside T-case, my plan is to use a Ford NP205 with a advanced adapters, adapter to my dodge Getrag 360 so ill have a driverside drop. My diamond axle has all the addons u can get from diamond. longfields and high pinion. The weight might be a problem but my suspension is higher in the front due to suspension design. The 4BT might level it out, if its too soft, ive been planning on buying alcan springs for the front anyway. I used them in the back then used 1985 toyota pickup procomp springs in the front. there not too great only 3 or 4 pack springs.

Once the 5VZ-FE is out im planning on plating the from inner frame rails and doing the same where the new transmission mounts are gona be. This should help with the torque, preventing my frame from twisting.

Very nice

Love the truck i'm not totaly sure on the gearing
my 2000 24V is perfect with 3.54 and 6sp running 33'S
I'm going to try this same gearing in my Dakota with 33'S
since you are running 35'S I would say that you won't need to
run that high but I still have a feeling the 4.88 might be a little low
you'll just have to give iut a try but I would guess 4.10 or 3.73

Right now there are a couple problems with the fitment… first off my turbo is right up against the firewall (check out the pictures….) Other problems are my ProComp suspension is way to week for the new setup so I’m going to beef it up a bit. My oil pan is resting on my cross over steering and Toyota E-locker so that’s another big problem as well as my Transmission shifter placement. It’s about 4 inches or so forward compared to my R150F so its almost in my Dash.
Anyone have and good info on turbo intercooler size? I was thinking about a STI top mounted intercooler on my Tacoma and just cut the hood up a little.

Looking to buy

Fuel Shutoff solenoid

Exhaust manifold with a better turbo placement (Thinking of cutting down a 6BT header so im looking for one of them too.)

Oil Filter relocation Kit

Cobra head intake and exhaust

I emailed the colorado DMV befor i started they told me it was ok... heres the email

Steed,

If your vehicle is a 1947 or older, the engine does not have to be the same . If your vehicle is a 1948 or newer, year the engine has to be the same year. You need to get a vin inspection and then take your title to your county motor vehicle office and have the title changed, showing the new fuel type.

Thank you for contacting the Division of Motor Vehicles, Titles and Registration Section. If you have questions, please call

Kathleen

Here is some close ups of my turbo, anyone have any ideas about a new exhaust header?

Image
At least 3 different exhaust manifolds are available for the 4BT - rear exhaust outlet under number 4, center exhaust outlet, and a manifold that exits under number 3-4 with a downward tilt. The manifold you have - rear exhaust outlet under number 4 - offers the least firewall clearance of the 3 manifolds I mentioned. Many here have cut and capped/welded 6BT manifolds to create a variety of outlet configurations to fit their application needs. The welds have no stress on them, so they should last indefinitely.

Click the link for some pics of the 4BT center outlet manifold. The link is to my96z's site who is also a 4BTswaps member.

Thanks for the help i was able to see the part number in your pics and i ordered it though cummins in portland only $124... Now the Oil Filter kit i think its 3328447 the didint have any, where did you order yours?

Damn I guess I gave them to much info lol. I guess I need to start looking for a 4bt and a dana 60 to replace my front d44!! For your tanny you can cut the shifter and add a "dog leg" to it. I put a r151 behind my 3.4l and that move my shifter 6" forward!! So I cut the shifter and add a 7" "dog leg" and a 4" leg to my reduction box.

From what i read from other people the DMV didint even inspect their engine when they changed there title over.... Im hoping to be done this month befor i head back to colorado for 30days, when im home im gona change over my title to diesel.

Im not sure what you mean by Dog Leg? Bending the sifter?

#30 ·
Well maybe i will just try and hope they dont look.

I cut the shifter right above the base then welded a 7" piece of 1/2 round bar horizontally then welded the top part of the shifter to the top of the round bar.

The t100 get registered as a light truck in CO, toyota did not classify it light of heavy. as far as obd they said since it has it i have to keep it and have it work for them to check but form what steed said i realy dont so who knows. I will wait to find out how it goes with steed lol.

Hmm that’s interesting I found this site http://www.autoworksparts.com/billet_shifter_relocation_kit.htm I want to see if I can try to make something like that...

I’m not to worried about it, there’s no emission testing in Colorado lol so there not going check... I’m just gona get a vin verification at the Toyota dealer back in the springs then take my title over to the DMV and see what they say... there’s no law in Colorado stating you need the OBD 2... You just need all the emissions systems and since this engine uses very high compression the only emission system you have is the cat... and you can go to the state patrol and get a certificate from them stating all emission systems are there, kind of like a salvage safety inspection.
What there most likely thinking is you’re swapping a new engine and your want to get rid of the OBD2 system… The law states you need same year or newer with all emission control systems. This engine was manufactured in 2005 and I have all the emission systems on it. So I should be good lol Im hoping to get finished this month so I can drive it home and find out

I like the truck, dont worry about the emissions if you've already checked into it carry on troop.

That shifter is nice, I made one like it for my mustang several years ago (just not as nice) You can too with some heims and 5/8" round bar.

I road my motorcycle from fort lewis to the cummins dealer in Portland, i was able to get the new manifold, gaskets and the cobra down pipe, i didint mesure the outlet of my HX30 and the Guy at cummins said he couldint tell if it would fit because theres acouple differnt sizes on the turbos?

I also posted up on pirate for the shifter problem got pointed to http://www.wildhorses4x4.com/product/Trail_Edition_Gear_Banger/Bronco_3-Speed_Transmission the design looks pretty simple to copy
