in my experience(mainly with series 60 detroit engines), bad injector tips will cause black smoke
white smoke can be cause by airated fuel(which results in bad idle, low power and missing)
i would try checking for airated fuel, run your fuel return into a bucket and check for air bubbles. also check the suction side and run the engine out of a bucket too

Tractor boy I was wondering if you had any idea if oil pan mods were needed on a 98 IFS ranger?

I just skimmed through this thread and looked at the pics, I like your header, I was just wondering if you thought there is any chance of using a factory manifold and clearing the turbo with the heater box? I know on the 6BT's there are alot of different manifold styles for different applications.

Thanks
Adam

I'm not as familiar with the newer IFS rangers, but I would think the clearance might be worse, as you not only have a crossmember down there, but also a steering gear. My TTB suspension has held up very well, but I don't think the IFS is quite as strong. It may do alright though. Oil pan mods are not that hard to do, don't let that stop you from a conversion.

A stock manifold would have still cleared the heater box ok on my truck, by about an inch. I built the header because I needed the turbo to clear the alternator, didn't want a hood scoop, and didn't want any more of a body lift.

Gotcha thanks!

In my experience, if the pump is worn out, engine will flutter more than miss. By this, I mean, the combustion cycles are less defined in the exhaust note. I have one question, in your test running during your install, did you run it with no or little exhaust on it with a cool outside temperature. I asked this because I have warped a valve on a new rebuilt engine by doing a cam break-in with open manifold in a shop during winter. Shop was probably about 55 degrees, ran engine at 2500 for 20 minutes, was running between 205-210 degrees, when I shut it down, the cool air traveled up the exhaust manifold, and warped one of the hot valves. The next time I started it, the piston kissed the valve, slightly bending the shaft and not seating good anymore. Still ran, just not good. Also, check for aftermarket pump prices, $1500 seems kind of high. I bet I can find a whole running engine for that.

What do you know, 25F in the shop and no manifold. :)
And either I missed a bent valve when assembling the first time, or it bent one during break-in. I guess I won't do that again.

The engine still acts about the same after replacing the valve though, so I don't know if that would be the problem.

I have a p-pump engine, it's rarer than the ve engines, and worth more because it's capable of more fuel output. There's also a lot of expensive parts inside the pump.

i have good news, the 2x4 same gen as ours dont need any pan fabrication :) lol but it would be great to have that 4x4 option. figured id share with u since i saw u had that other ranger sitting in the shop

That's good to know. My other ranger was a 94 4.0 4X4 though. I sold it a few months ago to a friend. So everything fits great in yours? I knew the 2X4's had a narrower crossmember profile, but it must be farther forward too. Great!

yeah she fit in pretty nice, little close to the steering box, but with the lift im prob gona raise it up little give it atleast 1/2" clearance. im trying to sit it so the trans is in same location so dont have to modify drive shaft lol.

Videos! This is with the HY35 on there. I'm switching back to the HX35 today, it was much better than the HY35.

nice fire ball!! what happen there?
I downshifted and it spit some raw fuel, notice the little white puff right before the bang?
That camera's mic just doesn't do justice to how loud that exhaust really is. I gotta get it quieter. I have one neighbor who thinks it's cool and tries to outdo me in his 6.0 powerstroke. I doubt any of the others think we're very cool.

Haha so get this guys- this morning I was in at the parts store for a few things, and I overheard someone bragging about MY TRUCK!!!

This guy was telling the parts people (they know both me and the truck quite well, and knew i was in the store!) about this jacked up ranger with what sounded like a bombed cummins that he saw last week that came ripping up the diesel performance shop's driveway sideways. I started giggling behind the other aisle. Thought yes, that probably would have been about the time I was trying a new turbo out lol. I started asking the guy about what the truck looked like and how it sounded. Then I asked him if he wanted to see it, because I drove it here and it's out back lol. Shoulda seen his face! Guess I'm getting a reputation around these parts.

Update- I came across a set of 191 delivery valves on ebay for $80, I couldn't watch them go, so I bought them. Installed them this morning, and now it's even more fun to drive!!! My idle smoothed up a bit, but the blue and white smoke and popping didn't. I'm gonna try some marine 370 injectors now perhaps. :) Oh and I can now get 40 psi boost out of the HX35, without even clamping the wastegate. I need compound turbos now. :(
There is a guy on Ebay that sells the 155deg spray pattern 370hp injectors for super cheap, he also gets them in the 145 pattern as well Im going to get a set. PM me if you want his info.

PM sent, thanks Broncoboy!

Did you check the valve springs when you went back into it? Any chance it needs valve springs changed out? or some stronger ones? It almost sounds like a little valve float when you let the RPMS climb some.

I dunno, but I've never seen a cummins send a fireball out the exhaust pipe. can you make it do it when ever you want??

Nice build! Do you mind if I stop by and take a look sometime? The more motivation the better!

Thanks! Not at all, just pm me and we can work something out.

By the way I see two things in your signature that you are replacing which I might be interested in, the 33's and the 31 spline 8.8. Spoken for yet, or do you even plan to get rid of them?

Both are gone now actually, i have what appears to be a hovercraft at this time....
