fuel cutting out with good pressure?

Guys I have got my truck running finally with all the pump and timing problems fixed. My problem now and had several times before is loosing fuel going down the road. I got out and got under truck and my gauge is showing 8pounds of pressure. I have a inside cab tank and it goes out into a water separator first. Right after that filter it goes into a big fuel filter with 3/8 fittings in and out. Next is the electric fuel pump and then the fuel pressure gauge. Then the line goes up to the front of truck into the bottom of the radiator and out the other side up to the block pump. I pulled my truck home and took out the line going into tank and nothing was blocking it. I had a friend turn over truck while I cracked open the injector lines and bled them. After about 3 tries the truck cranked. This has happened several times since I have put engine in truck and need some ideas. Do the block pumps slowly go out or do they die at one time. Where else could it be getting air if all seems snug and secure?

If that is like a gasser mechanical fuel pump you should be able to take it off and pump the lever and put the outlet against your finger and feel the pressure steady and strong against your finger if its good. If not it will pump and fade slowly or not pump at all. Or go the intake route and feel the vacuum. If it fades ya got problems I think.

what cap are you referring to?

My cap is a new item from obsolete ford out of Tulsa OK. It looks like the factory one did. I am leaning twords the block pump because it never runs out of fuel idling. I am going to check into a new one.

The older gas caps are not vented !!! If your stock cap isn't vented ,no pump in world will make a difference .At idle your using very little fuel but as you drive the more you need.

It's no different than having a water tank pull a vacuume over the neck and you can pull the plug on the bottom of tank and no water comes out.

Scott it looks like my cap is not vented. It has a little valve looking thing in the middle but the rubber seals off and there is no holes any where in cap. I will try to find a cap and let yall know!

messed with my cap some more and it is vented. I have a new fuel filter for the block and hopefully the rain will leave out this afternoon. The guys at cummins said that if its not the pump it must be sucking air with all my connections and fittings that I have. Have my other 68 f100 in the shop swapping out engine so my cummins is sitting in garage with the rain blowing 90 to nothing. I think we have got over 2" rain so far today.

I have a 4BT in my Grumman. The power to the fuel shutoff solenoid was intermittent. I darn near burned up the starter looking for fuel plumbing problems. Never found the loose connection - just ran a new wire.

Try a test light or voltmeter on the fuel shutoff solenoid.

I put new filter on engine and filled it up. Truck started and ran good for about 2 minutes. Im going to redo my whole fuel system. I have to many connections and filters going every where. I will run a line strait from the tank to the pump on block with no electric pusher. If I start cranking over engine how long should it take to get fuel to fill the line? Do I need to pump on the little leaver on the side of pump? I tried that today with no go.

I have a 65 Ford with a 5.9 and am using the in cab tank. When I started mine for the first time I just primed the system with the lever on the engine lift pump. I pumped until fuel came out of the bleeder port on the fuel filter housing. If there is no resistance on the lever on the mechanical lift pump try bumping the engine over with the starter. This will move the cam enough for a lobe to be pressing against the pump.

I am not running any extra filters. But I am running bulkhead fittings through the cab floor and frame.

Is there a particular reason for routing the fuel through the radiator lower tank? I've only heard of that tank being used as a trans fluid cooler on auto-trans vehicles. Doesn't seem to offer any real advantage with fuel cooling as it would be roughly the same as engine temp anyway.

I was going for the warming to help thin down the oil I was burning in the fuel. After I get every thing going good I will get away from the oil on this engine.

Some times you overlook the most obvious things because you are sure about something. Before I took truck to first shop I put about 15 gallons of diesel and 2 gallons on wmo. I have put about 4 hours jacking with fittings and lines and bleeding injectors over and over again for nothing. I took my tank lines loose and shot air through them again this morn and hooked all the lines back to the filters and pump. I turned key on with the gas tank cap off and could here sucking. Somebody siphoned all my fuel out but maybe a few gallons. This is were my next project is going because of all this. I need a fuel gauge that will work in my truck with factory sending unit. I have a f600 dash with the round gauges. Will any gauge work or do I need to ask for something special to make work for my unit. This sure has made me feel pretty dumb!:rasta:

I used the f600 dash with all aftermarket gauges. They are round and look nice. Ill try to get a pic to show you what I have done.
