Ok where can we get a manual or specs ?

140 bucks for a manual up here in Canada , there has to be some cheaper sources for manuals or specs out there.
Cummins should sell a CD for 20 bucks and not a cent higher. We also need a source for bearings and gaskets and water pumps and alternators besides cummins.

"The primary difference between an on road and off road engine is the function of the governer. The on road engine has what is sometimes referred to as a speed governer, which does exactly what the name implies. It limits the maximum rpm of the engine and nothing else. Actual engine speed (below max) is controlled by the throttle linkage on the injection pump. If the load on the engine increases, rpm will decrease unless the throttle is opened further by some outside influence. In the case of a truck engine, that influence would be the driver's foot. The off road engine has a load governer. It's purpose is to keep the engine at a specified rpm regardless of load. As load increases or decreases, the governer proportionally increases or decreases fuel delivery to maintain the same rpm without any movement of the throttle. What this means is, when your truck with the off road engine in it encounters a hill, it is going to try to go faster all by itself. I'm not saying it won't work, but it will be very "different" to drive, and could potentially be dangerous under certain circumstances.

They are designed to run at a fixed speed to prevent cavitations in the pump or to maintain the hertz frequency in a generator. Clutch Cover AKA Pressure Plate:
Tighten cover bolts a few threads at a time. Cover bolts must be tightened evenly and to specified torque to avoid distorting cover.

Tighten 5/16" diameter bolts to 17 ft/lb [23 N.m]
Tighten 3/8" diameter bolts to 30 ft/lb [41 N.m]

There are two types of Engine Parts Manuals and one Service Manual.

Since we have the torque specs, here is a mostly complete list of the fasteners used on our B series engines that the torque applies to..
This list is riped from a 6BT manual, so some quanities (oil pan bolts, injector line mounts) will be difrent, adjust as needed.

3900955 Metal expansion plug. (Little plug that fills in the little hole in the block, where the old dipstick went, front sump v.s. rear sump.) All years.

3928740 Oil dipstick. 12 & 24 valve.

3905801 Oil dipstick tube. (Plastic.) 12 & 24 valve.

3280885 Oil gage metal. (The metal piece that is in-between the plastic dipstick tube and the block.) 12 & 24 valve.

4089093 Oil pan. (Aluiminum, the least expensive replacement pan.) 1994-1998. 12 valve, fits 1989-2002 engines.

3938455 Oil pickup/suction tube. 12 & 24 valve same as oil pan.

3914383 Pick-up tube gasket. All years.

3926910 Oil pan plug. 12 & 24 valve.

3902425 Oil pan copper washer. 12 & 24 valve.

3902605 Valve cover w/plug. (Changes from the Dodge style oil filler area.) All 12 valve engines. 1989-1998.

3903463 Access cover plug. (Covers the hole where the Dodge style oil filler neck was.) All 12 valve engines. 1988-1998.

3931744 Cummins 12 valve exhaust manifold. Turbo outlet pointing straight down between #5 & #6 cylinder (for much better air box clearence-tighter to the engine)

3973422 Heres another manifold that also has the port outlet straight down, but this one has the outlet in the center of the manifold, between #3 & #4 cylinder.

I went ahead and moved the torque values into this thread to clean out some of the excessive stickies...

Adapter plate bolts

I was looking in FAQ and could not find. Do I have to go to Cummins for the adapter plate bolts or are they standard grade 8's? I know the torque spec of 101 ft lbs. Thank you.

There are a lot of 6bt's here with the Bosch A-pump. Its basicallly used as an Industrial type engine though a few trucks use it also. All in all, a very noisey pump, as all inlines are, with the max factory rating at 125hp@2500 in the 6bt, coz the ones that make the higher ratings have the Ve till about 210hp, after which the P-inline takes over.........
